Servant leadership is crucial to our work of building up community and of doing a massive work of evangelization. Unfortunately, many who are leaders in our Church today may not have the heart of a servant. But Jesus, our Lord and Master, came not to be served but to serve. He is our main model.
We all have much to learn, but there is a dearth of material or formation on what makes for an effective servant leader. But the principles are there sprinkled all throughout the Bible. Our Servant General in this book comes up with 144 such principles.
St. James was one of the twelve apostles, and is the first among them to be martyred. He with his brother John, accompanied by their mother, were those who sought places of honor at Jesus’ right and left. That is when Jesus taught them about servant leadership. James never forgot the lesson.
Let us learn these lessons as well.
