Today’s reading: Ephesians 4:1-6
As a community of believers we strive to be “of one heart and mind” (Acts 4:32a). This is about the reality of who we are and what we are called to be: “one body and one Spirit” (v.4a). Such unity is necessary in order that God can use us for His purposes, that we will be able to fulfill our vocation, “as you were also called to the one hope of your call” (v.4b). Such unity is crucial in order to empower us in our witness, as we proclaim the “one Lord, one faith, one baptism” (v.5). Such unity is a powerful manifestation of our all being children of God, brought into the one family, who look to “one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” (v.6).
As such, we must all be brethren “striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace” (v.3). We are to be at peace with one another, that is, being in right relationship with each other. How is this possible? We are to relate with each other “with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love” (v.2). We are not to think highly of ourselves, but rather consider others as more important than ourselves. We are to let go of pride and be willing to take the lowest place as a servant. We are to be patient with the shortcomings of others, to be tolerant and forgiving. We are to love others as we love ourselves.
We have been called and chosen. God has already been using us, but intends to use us even more, with greater manifestation of Spirit power. We are sent forth to do God’s work, so crucial in the darkened world today. God provides the grace and strength needed. What can prevent us from fulfilling our call? It is only we ourselves. Thus we are “to live in a manner worthy of the call (we) have received” (v.1). It is a lofty call. It is doing the very work of God. It is being an instrument to bring Jesus’ salvation to others. We must strive to be worthy, to be pleasing to God, to be fitting instruments that the Spirit will empower.
