(Part 26)

Today’s reading: Colossians 3:14-24

Division rather than unity seems to be the rule in the world and even in the Church. Division is the case between husband and wife, parents and children, parish ministries, religious congregations, Church organizations, ecclesial movements, and individual Catholics in general. This is not as God intends. God is one, husband and wife are one, the Church is one. What needs to happen?

Unity can only be in Christ. Good intentions are not enough. We need to put on the mind and heart of Jesus.

You want peace in the body? Then “let the peace of Christ control your hearts” (v.15a). That is not just peaceful co-existence (just being tolerant of each other), but the shalom that only Christ can bring. It is “the peace into which you were also called in one body.” (v.15b).

You want to have the wisdom of God for your day-to-day interactions with others? That wisdom by which “you teach and admonish one another” (v.16b)? Then “let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” (v.16a). Not your thoughts, opinions, preferences, priorities, agenda, but his.

Wives, do you want to be able to live out subordination to your husbands that God intends? Well, do not look at your husband, whom you do not see as superior, but look to Jesus, whom you profess to love and follow. Then you can accept that such subordination “is proper in the Lord.” (v.18b). Submission is not demeaning, as Jesus himself was submitted to the Father.

Children, having a hard time obeying your parents? In everything as God intends? Then do not focus on their faults and shortcomings, but on the perfect Christ who wills such obedience. Know that such obedience “is pleasing to the Lord.” (v.20b).

Slaves (or current-day servants or employees), are you chafing under the authority of your master (or employer)? Even in community, are you members having a hard time accepting the leadership of those placed over you? You might just be complicating matters. Have “simplicity of heart, fearing the Lord” (v.22b). You might be looking at your leader and not finding him/her suitable for the position. Well, God appointed him/her and so you should just submit. Your action is “for the Lord and not for others” (v.23b). You might not see what benefit you will get from submitting to such a leader. Well, your ultimate leader is Jesus, and he certainly will give you your just reward. You should know “that you will receive from the Lord the due payment” (v.24a). At the end of the day, your submission is not to your human leader/master but to Christ. So “be slaves of the Lord Christ.” (v.24b).

Do you grasp it now? You want all your relationships to go well? Simple. Be centered on Christ (our very first Core Value in CFC-FFL). Seek only to please him. “And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus” (v.17a).

Through all of our 29 years, we have spoken much of our vision and mission, who we are, what we are called to do. We know that we are an evangelistic and missionary community. This has been true from the very beginning and has never changed. We do our work within the context of family renewal. That is one distinct factor that distinguishes us from other renewal movements.

The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. The Eucharist is the greatest gift God gives to His people. The Eucharist is our path to holiness and Christian perfection. The Eucharist is crucial to our work of the New Evangelization. We must have greater understanding and appreciation of the Eucharist, so that we can go forth and truly be effective witnesses to salvation in Jesus.

Servant leadership is crucial to our work of building up community and of doing a massive work of evangelization. Unfortunately, many who are leaders in our Church today may not have the heart of a servant. But Jesus, our Lord and Master, came not to be served but to serve. He is our main model.
