OUR THEME FOR 2018
(Part 4)

GREATNESS IN WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO

September 12, 2017

Today’s readings:
Colossians 2:6-15
Psalm 145:1-11
Luke 6:12-19

We know this reality about God: “Great is the Lord and worthy of much praise, whose grandeur is beyond understanding.” (Ps 145:3). David speaks of God’s mighty works, His majestic glory, His wonderful deeds, His awesome acts, His great deeds, His abounding goodness, His abounding in mercy, His glorious reign, His mighty works (Ps 145:4-8,11). God is great indeed.

Now God’s people are also called to do great works, to perform signs and wonders in the power of the Spirit. Jesus started with a core group, when “he called his disciples to himself, and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named apostles” (Lk 6:13). Knowing what he intended his people to do after he returned to heaven, Jesus taught them and formed them, preparing them to do what he would do. Many who came to Jesus were “healed of their diseases; and even those who were tormented by unclean spirits were cured.” (Lk 6:18). Later the apostles too would heal and drive out demons. The apostles, ultimately to minister in the name of Jesus, were destined for greatness and manifested such in their work.

We too as God’s people and God’s instruments are destined for greatness, but how does that happen? We must strive to be holy as God is holy, to be perfect as the heavenly Father is perfect. To be holy is to be set apart, to be not of the world. “See to it that no one captivate you with an empty, seductive philosophy according to human tradition, according to the elemental powers of the world and not according to Christ.” (Col 2:8).

We have received Christ as Savior and Lord, we have turned to faith in Jesus, but we need to move on from there. There is more. “So, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in him, rooted in him and built upon him and established in the faith as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” (Col 2:6-7). How then are we to be holy?

First, we are to walk in Christ. We follow in the footsteps of Jesus. We are his disciples. We are to obey his commands. We are not to stray from the straight and narrow path.

Second, we are to be rooted in Christ. His ways are to be our ways. We are to put on the mind of the Master. Everything that we are, everything that we say or do, are to be in accordance with the will of Jesus.

Third, we are to be built upon Christ. Jesus is the Rock upon which our lives are founded. We rely on nothing but our Lord. We fully trust in him. We look to him for everything that we need in life. Jesus gives us a future full of hope.

To be another Christ is greatness. “For in him dwells the whole fullness of the deity bodily, and you share in this fullness in him, who is the head of every principality and power.” (Col 2:9-10). Is that not amazing? We who are human can become divine. We who are weak can have authority over principalities and powers. Such is what God intends for us to be, and what God intends for us to do.

As such are we destined for greatness.

WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE DO

Through all of our 29 years, we have spoken much of our vision and mission, who we are, what we are called to do. We know that we are an evangelistic and missionary community. This has been true from the very beginning and has never changed. We do our work within the context of family renewal. That is one distinct factor that distinguishes us from other renewal movements.

The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. The Eucharist is the greatest gift God gives to His people. The Eucharist is our path to holiness and Christian perfection. The Eucharist is crucial to our work of the New Evangelization. We must have greater understanding and appreciation of the Eucharist, so that we can go forth and truly be effective witnesses to salvation in Jesus.

Servant leadership is crucial to our work of building up community and of doing a massive work of evangelization. Unfortunately, many who are leaders in our Church today may not have the heart of a servant. But Jesus, our Lord and Master, came not to be served but to serve. He is our main model.
