FROM THE SERVANT GENERAL

OUR THEME FOR 2019
(Part 4)

A PSALM OF THANKSGIVING

September 18, 2018
Today’s reading: Psalm 100:1-5

Today’s psalm is entitled “Processional Hymn” and is “a psalm of thanksgiving” (v.1a). It is a hymn inviting people to enter the Temple courts with offerings of thanksgiving to God who created them. For holy warriors, this is an appropriate psalm whenever we enter into the presence of God, whether in our prayer nook or in the chapel or church. We consider the declaration of Joshua (per our theme).

As for me
The foundation is our personal relationship with God. It is first and foremost me and God. We know Him and we know who we are. “Know that the Lord is God, he made us, we belong to him” (v.3a). We are His people. We are His servants/slaves. Our lives belong to Him.

And my household
We also know that “we are his people, the flock he shepherds.” (v.3b). First, our children are primarily His children, and we are to care for them as such. Our community is the body of people whom He has called together for His purpose, and community members are brothers and sisters in the Lord.Second, Jesus is the Chief Shepherd, who entrusts his sheep to human shepherds. As servant leaders, we are to take responsibility for our home/family/children as well as those placed in our care in the community.

We will serve the Lord
What God does for us, how He forms us and uses us as instruments to help form others, is so that He will have workers for the harvest. We serve God basically through our work of evangelization and mission. Challenging as this work is, we are to “serve the Lord with gladness” (v.2a). As His people, as His servants, as part of the armies of the Spirit, we serve God, and we do so willingly and joyfully.

It is a wonderful life. If we truly realized who God is and who we are supposed to be, and we allow God to form us and use us, that provides the foundation for being destined for greatness. We just need to see, to respond, and to give our all.

Then we will have a life of joy, even as we spread the joy of the Lord to the whole world. “Shout joyfully to the Lord, all you lands” (v.1b). Our service to God will never be tedious or unsatisfying, so we can always “come before him with joyful song.” (v.2b). Our lives will be filled with praise and thanksgiving to God. “Enter his gates with thanksgiving, his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name” (v.4).

What a wonderful God we serve. He is good and merciful. “Good indeed is the Lord, His mercy endures forever” (v.5a). And our God will always be faithful to us, to our children, to our children’s children, and to all the generations until Jesus returns once again. “His faithfulness lasts through every generation.” (v.5b).

All these are more than enough reasons to say, “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE DO

Through all of our 29 years, we have spoken much of our vision and mission, who we are, what we are called to do. We know that we are an evangelistic and missionary community. This has been true from the very beginning and has never changed. We do our work within the context of family renewal. That is one distinct factor that distinguishes us from other renewal movements.

Books and Magazines

The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. The Eucharist is the greatest gift God gives to His people. The Eucharist is our path to holiness and Christian perfection. The Eucharist is crucial to our work of the New Evangelization. We must have greater understanding and appreciation of the Eucharist, so that we can go forth and truly be effective witnesses to salvation in Jesus.

Servant leadership is crucial to our work of building up community and of doing a massive work of evangelization. Unfortunately, many who are leaders in our Church today may not have the heart of a servant. But Jesus, our Lord and Master, came not to be served but to serve. He is our main model.
