(Part 6)

October 6, 2018

Today’s readings:
Job 42:1-16
Psalm 119:66-130
Luke 10:17-24

Job was a righteous man whom the Lord allowed to be assaulted by Satan. He lost everything, except his life. Job never turned against the Lord, despite the seeming injustice he underwent. But in the end, the Lord restored and even doubled his fortunes. “After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years, and he saw his children, his grandchildren, and even his great-grandchildren.” (Jb 42:16).

Now most of us will not see our great-grandchildren, but we can try to make the world a better place for them. This is basically through the work of worldwide evangelization, as we strive to bring as many people as we can to Christ, enabling him to transform their lives.

Thus we have all been called to the New Evangelization. But in our Church, there is a lot of talk, mainly about social justice issues and accommodation of sinners, but most Catholics fail to understand the need of the times, which is spiritual renewal. “I have spoken but did not understand; things too marvelous for me, which I did not know.” (Jb 42:3b). Catholics have not heard of, or do not understand, or do not know how to handle, the call to the New Evangelization.

A main element of the New Evangelization is the engagement of God’s people in spiritual warfare, as they go about evangelization and mission. In this war, we engage the enemy, whom Jesus has already defeated. “I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky.” (Lk 10:18). We share in that victory, as the early disciples experienced. “Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name.” (Lk 10:17b). Jesus, our Commander-in-Chief, urges us on. “Behold, I have given you the power to tread upon serpents and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you.” (Lk 10:19). But of course, Satan can harm us, as he did to Job. But God will always be there for us, and we will be shielded from spiritual harm.

In fact, another element of the New Evangelization is embrace of the cross. The authentic gospel is the gospel of the cross. Authentic Christians will be afflicted, but this will redound to our good. “It was good for me to be afflicted, in order to learn your statutes.” (Ps 119:71).

So let us see and understand what the Spirit is telling and showing us, in calling us to the New Evangelization. Then we can focus on what is really essential and critical in the work of our Church today, and God will not have to rebuke us: “Who is this who obscures counsel with ignorance?” (Jb 42:3a). Then Jesus can affirm us: “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.” (Lk 10:23). We keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, and we see the work that the Holy Spirit desires for us to do. It is all about salvation and making it to heaven. “My eyes long to see your salvation and the promise of your righteousness.” (Ps 119:123).

And as we understand, then we say, “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Then we can move forward with confidence, knowing we are doing the best for our families and for our Church. We look forward to our eternal reward as we “rejoice because (our) names are written in heaven.” (Lk 10:20b).

Through all of our 29 years, we have spoken much of our vision and mission, who we are, what we are called to do. We know that we are an evangelistic and missionary community. This has been true from the very beginning and has never changed. We do our work within the context of family renewal. That is one distinct factor that distinguishes us from other renewal movements.

The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. The Eucharist is the greatest gift God gives to His people. The Eucharist is our path to holiness and Christian perfection. The Eucharist is crucial to our work of the New Evangelization. We must have greater understanding and appreciation of the Eucharist, so that we can go forth and truly be effective witnesses to salvation in Jesus.

Servant leadership is crucial to our work of building up community and of doing a massive work of evangelization. Unfortunately, many who are leaders in our Church today may not have the heart of a servant. But Jesus, our Lord and Master, came not to be served but to serve. He is our main model.
